I can't emphasize what a huge and frightening step that is for me. If I hadn't been so tired, I wouldn't have sent the draft to Joseph Sale, my editor. How do I know that I am a woman in a chicken suit?
I've been hanging onto the manuscript since last spring. I finished the first draft in 2018 and have gone over it four times.
Am I terrified? Yes. However, it was time to cut the umbilical cord. If anybody who understands is reading this, pray for me to write and revise my best work to date.
On another, happier note, I FINALLY FINISHED EDITING AND DESIGNING My Spoken Word Wife: Playin for Keeps by Misael Juarez! The cover is just gorgeous. Plus, I fulfilled one of my top ten bucket list items: I produced a hard-covered book! Yeees!
I hope you get a copy! Tell me what you think in the comments below!
********************* MARIA J. ESTRADA is an English college professor of Composition, Literature, and her favorite, Creative Writing. She grew up in the desert outside of Yuma, Arizona in the real Barrio de Los Locos, a barrio comprised of new Mexican immigrants and first-generation Chicanos. Drawing from this setting and experiences, she writes like a loca every minute she can—all while magically balancing her work and family obligations. She lives in Chicago’s south side with her wonderfully supportive husband, two remarkable children, and a menagerie of animals.
